IUPUI has a rich and long tradition of supporting research that is community engaged and seeks to solve complex problems. Students, staff, and faculty are drawn to IUPUI as the place to engage with community partners to collaboratively plan, discover, and generate knowledge and solutions across all disciplines and programs. This workshop highlights pathways to community engaged, translational research endeavors and the myriad resources that support creative inquiry, academic success and research collaboration with community partners.

IUPUI Centers and Institutes

This workshop will inform the faculty about IUPUI Centers and Institutes (C&I). Select C&I Directors will present brief descriptions of their respective Center or Institute and then the moderator will help guide discussion on questions such as: How can the C&I’s help young faculty build successful research programs? What is the best way for new faculty to become involved in a C&I? What is/was the rationale for forming your C&I? How has your C&I improved grant funding for your faculty members? What types of research programs have benefited from C&I membership? In other words, what types of grants were only possible because of the value added of a C&I? The goal of this workshop is to explore best practices and campus opportunities for faculty members to engage with Centers and Institutes at IUPUI. The session will be moderated by Dr. Marc S. Mendonca, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, IUPUI. Participants will be invited to ask questions during and after the workshop.

IUPUI Faculty-mentored Student Research

This workshop will guide faculty through the merits and process of providing mentoring to students through research experiences. The goal of this workshop is to explore best practices and campus opportunities for faculty-mentored student research experiences, and to help faculty learn more about research mentoring options. The session will be moderated by Dr. Janice Blum, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education. A snapshot will be provided of campus opportunities to mentor high school, undergraduate and graduate students through research experiences. The workshop will delve into the following topics: a summary of student mentoring programs; program structure/disciplines; identification of faculty mentors; the type of students participating in these program(s); and how students are recruited to these programs. Information will also be provided on how faculty can connect with the showcased programs. Participants will be invited to ask questions during and after the workshop.
